Discourse, 1585.

Discourse given by Torquato Tasso about the revolt in France and about Charles V. By context the document seems to be talking about France either after the battle of St. Quentin in 1557 or shortly after the start of the religious wars in 1562. Most of the material deals with Charles V "king of France," however, the internal data indicates that Tasso was talking about Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor (Carlos I of Spain), 1500-1558. Most of the content of the talk is gossip about Charles and speculation as to the motives for his actions. The manuscript was copied in 1585. The original discourse (if it was ever presented in an oral form) was probably originally given in the 1560s or 1570s. Also found in the same binding: Discourse on a better way to build a fortress and how to lead troops more effectively--Discourse on the length of walls in a fortress--Report given by Federico Badoaro on Charles V and France in 1557--Report on the reign in Sicily--Report on the duke of Terranova.
